The natural answer to Laminitis

PED is now proud to announce the launch of a new and unique product, to be distributed by Battle Hayward and Bower Ltd: LaminTec 5-HT™. An innovative equine feed supplement, LaminTec 5-HT™ supports normal circulation to the hoof and its capillary bed.

LaminTec 5-HT™ contains a unique ingredient (feverfew herb) standardised so that the same chemicals of the herb are available in every pot you buy, unlike many other products where the quality varies from tub to tub. Our research shows that serotonin is a key factor in Cushing’s disease; other researchers have also shown that serotonin may constrict the equine digital (hoof) blood vessels. This is important because when platelets are activated, they release serotonin into the blood circulation; feverfew is known to attenuate platelet activating factor. Additionally, parthenolide (a component of feverfew herb) has been shown to help protect equine digital blood vessels.

  • Suitable for horses and ponies prone to laminitis, those with conditions such as Cushing’s disease or metabolic syndrome or where owners are worried about laminitis risk associated with weight gain and/or periods of high grass growth (spring and autumn). Can be fed all year round.
  • Different from other products – backed by published science – includes a unique natural ingredient, ground feverfew herb. No current equine supplement has this ingredient.
  • May help to decrease obesity; helpful for the ‘good doer’, fat cob, Shetland, Shire or other types of horse which put on weight easily.
  • Feverfew is known to help balance body systems and assist in maintaining healthy circulation.
  • Easy to use and good value (over 1 months supply per pot).
  • Trialed with veterinary clients and horse sanctuaries.
  • Flavoured with natural aniseed – very palatable to the horse.

Danny is a 14 year old gelded piebald cob owned by Mrs. Steadman. He was seen at our practice with laminitis on 20th September 2008. Bulging supra orbital fat pads were noticed but no other signs of Equine Pituitary Pars Intermediate Dysfunction (EPPID) were seen.

Over the next few weeks Danny developed hirsutism and hyperhidrosis (curly coat and sweating). This increased the suspicion of EPPID and following discussion with Mrs. Steadman blood tests were decided upon. Blood sampling occurred on 7th January 2009.

Due to the unreliable nature of current testing and Mrs. Steadman’s enthusiasm to fully understand Danny’s condition, our samples were sent to Pegasus Equine Diagnostics (PED). Evaluation of Danny’s hormone assays revealed results consistent with EPPID.

Ratios of melatonin compared to both dopamine and serotonin showed a relatively high level of serotonin. Danny also had an elevated level of ACTH. Treatment was started using PED’s feverfew-based supplement in February 2009. Danny was last seen by our practice on 1st May 2009. At this time his bulging supra orbital fat pads were reduced to within normal limits, as was his hirsutism and hyperhidrosis. Further bloods are currently with PED to validate the massive clinical improvement seen.

HorseWorld took part in the PED feverfew trials over a three month period in 2008. A range of animals were used for the work some of whom suffered from Cushing’s syndrome. A number of these were already receiving therapeutic Pergolide to alleviated symptoms. It was interesting to note that the classic pot bellied appearance and hair coat retention in two of the subject animals improved as the trail developed. We were convinced that the product went some way to alleviate symptoms whilst being palatable and non toxic.

I would just like to let you know about one of my horses and your product Lamintec 5HT. Millie is a 15.2hh TB x Welsh D 12 year old Mare; she came down with laminitis September 2010. After a number of week’s box rest and monitoring via ourselves and the vet she then had x-rays which showed a slight change in her feet, she had extreme remedial trimming. We then had another attack of Laminitis in February, which was hard to believe as she was on box rest, with soaked hay and Bailey's Lo-Cal Balancer with Dengie Hi-Fi Lite, so we had to rethink how we were going to manage her. I contacted TopSpec who talked to me about their TopSpec Top Chop Lite (molasses free), so off I went to the local saddlers and it was while I was in there that they mentioned Lamintec 5HT, so away I came with my Chop and a tub of Lamintec.

All I can say is thank you; Millie is well on the road to recovery. She is due to have a set of shoes on this week and begins walking work; I am 100% sure that Lamintec has helped us greatly to turn this corner. I really did think that it was the curtains for Millie at the beginning of the year...I will continue to use your product and recommend it to others....So once again thank you

Mattie (aka Walton Lyric). My father brought Mattie for my mother as a Christmas present, from our neighbour and good family friend, fifteen years ago. She was 15 when we took her on and at 18 years old she was showing the classic signs of the long curly coat, which I maintained by clipping her all year round. As she got older I was struggling to keep weight on her during the winter and I feared her getting laminitis during the summer months due to the Cushing syndrome.

Mattie was lucky to have trialed PED’s feed supplement and her initial response was excellent, she really perked up, had a shiny coat and was much brighter. Sadly, Mattie did not finish the trial as she succumbed to an existing arthritic condition. I just wish she had been on the supplement when she was first diagnosed with Cushing’s as she could have had a better quality of life. Mattie was a super little pony who had a large fan club having taught many children to ride and putting more experienced children in their place by bucking them off including me, every time I rode her!!

Hello, I just wanted to tell you how great I think your product Lamintec 5HT is. I have owned my Shetland pony, ‘Pippin’, for six years and for the first time last year he had three mild bouts of Laminitis which meant coming off the grass and being isolated from his friends. This wasn’t nice for him and was very worrying for me. Having read about your product in a horse magazine & decided to give it a try, and started him on it last August. As you can imagine I was very worried about coming into spring this year and didn’t want him to have to be isolated from his friends again.

Using your product alongside strip grazing, regular weight taping and plenty of exercise, up to now he has been able to stay with the others and enjoy the grass. I can’t tell you what a relief this has been to me. Not only can he stay out at grass, but he he looks fantastic with a glossy coat, is very bright & happy with no recurrence of Laminitis. I just wanted to thank you and hope that other horse owners find this product as fantastic as I have. I have already recommended it to several other owners.
